Conceal Minor Imperfections with Porcelain Veneers

I f you are struggling with minor dental imperfections such as chips, cracks, or discoloration, Avason Family Dentistry can apply porcelain veneers to improve the appearance of your smile. Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length. These thin, custom-made shells cover the tooth surface, concealing dental concerns and blending seamlessly with surrounding teeth. In addition they can function as “instant orthodontics,” correcting slightly crooked or gapped teeth. At Avason Family Dentistry in Denver, NC, our team uses the highest quality, most durable material to help you achieve natural-looking results. Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. You will need to discuss the best choice of veneer material for you with our dentists at Avason Family Dentistry

Determining Candidacy

To determine whether you are a candidate for porcelain veneers, Avason Family Dentistry will evaluate your oral health and the structure of your smile. He may request x-rays or advanced imaging to verify that your teeth are strong enough to support veneers. As veneer placement requires reshaping of the tooth, you must have sufficient enamel to tolerate the preparatory process. You may be eligible for this treatment if you wish to address:

  • Extensive dental staining that does not respond to traditional whitening treatments
  • Teeth that are chipped, broken and crooked teeth
  • Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth)
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Small chips or cracks
  • Unusually shaped teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (for example, have craters or bulges in them)
  • Worn teeth that are discolored either because of root canal treatment; stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discolored the tooth
  • As with all cosmetic dentistry procedures, you must be free from gum disease and tooth decay before beginning treatment. If your doctor notices signs of these conditions during your consultation, he will first provide the appropriate periodontal care to address these concerns. Getting a dental veneer usually requires three trips to the dentist one for a consultation and two to make and apply the veneers.

    Veneer Treatment

After determining candidacy, we can work with you to design veneers that meet your cosmetic goals and dental needs. Before treatment, your doctor may administer a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort.

    Preparation

Once you are ready, we will reshape your tooth in preparation for veneers. Avason Family Dentistry will remove a small amount of enamel to ensure that your veneers fit comfortably in your smile. Our team can then take impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to a trusted dental laboratory and used to manufacture your custom veneers. As this process can take one to two weeks, Avason Family Dentistry can provide you with temporary restorations to wear while you await your final veneers.

    Placement

When your veneers are ready, you will return to our office for placement. Avason Family Dentistry will ensure proper fit and color for the most realistic look. If necessary, we can also make adjustments at this time. If no modifications are needed, we will clean and gently etch the tooth surface to create a strong bond between your teeth and the veneers. We will then apply dental cement to the veneer and position it on your tooth. Once placed, we will shine a special light onto the cement to harden the veneer in place.

The Benefits and Advantages of Dental Veneers

When applied by an experienced dentist like Frank Avason and Dr. Alyssa Wolff, these restorations can dramatically improve the appearance of your smile and help boost your self-confidence. Porcelain veneers provide a conservative method of cosmetic alteration, while still providing comprehensive results. Furthermore, veneers are made from state-of-the-art porcelain, which is a durable, long-lasting material. When properly cared for, you can enjoy a vibrant smile for up to 15 years. Veneers offer the following advantages:

  • They provide a natural tooth appearance.
  • Gum tissue tolerates porcelain well.
  • Porcelain veneers are stain resistant.
  • The color of a porcelain veneer can be selected such that it makes dark teeth appear whiter.
  • Veneers offer a conservative approach to changing a tooth's color and shape; veneers generally don't require the extensive shaping prior to the procedure that crowns do, yet offer a stronger, more aesthetic alternative.
  •      A smile makeover can address several cosmetic concerns, reconstructing the appearance of your smile and improving your quality of life.
