Invisalign® is able to address all sorts of issues with poor dental alignment, but it is not always an ideal treatment for a patient. Sometimes the issues with tooth alignment go beyond the ability of what Invisalign can treat, meaning these clear plastic aligners are not the best orthodontic solution available.
Thankfully, Dr. Frank Avason III has other treatment options available for patients in the greater Denver and Charlotte, NC area. Below are a few different alternatives to Invisalign. We’ll go over how they work and who may be a good candidate.
For minor issues with crooked teeth, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary at all. Predominantly cosmetic issues with dental alignment can be treated with porcelain veneers. These thin shells of dental ceramic are placed on the front of your most prominent teeth. When in place, the porcelain veneers mask flaws from view.
In addition to treating crooked and poorly aligned teeth, porcelain veneers can also treat cracks, chips, gaps, size asymmetry, and stains. It’s a versatile cosmetic dentistry and smile makeover tool.
Six Month Smiles
Invisalign uses clear, plastic aligner trays to shift the position of the teeth. By contrast, Six Month Smiles® uses clear and tooth-colored braces to help reposition the teeth at an accelerated rate. Six Month Smiles works like traditional orthodontics, but is less noticeable and much faster.
Six Month Smiles is ideal for patients who would like a less-noticeable form of orthodontic care but are not good candidates for Invisalign. Think of it as an Invisalign-like approach to normal braces.
Traditional Orthodontic Care
For many people who are not good candidates for Invisalign, the ideal option for dental treatment is traditional orthodontics. Using brackets, wires, bands, and spacers, the teeth and the palate can be gradually changed in order to achieve healthy and ideal dental alignment.
The exact nature of your orthodontic treatment can vary depending your malocclusion and what issues you are facing.
Oral Surgery and Advanced Orthodontics
For major issues with the shape of the jawbone and/or the palate, traditional orthodontics alone may not be enough. That is when oral surgery combined with orthodontic care may be recommended. This is a much more invasive approach to treating misaligned teeth, but it may be necessary in serious cases of malocclusion.
As with traditional orthodontics, the nature of treatment can vary. In most cases, the oral surgery will be performed prior to any orthodontic adjustments.
