Adult Orthodontics Timeline

While braces take longer than many cosmetic dentistry treatment options, they also improve full function and oral health. Today, our team at Avason Family Dentistry in Denver, NC discusses the adult orthodontics timeline and explains what patients should expect during their treatment process.

Initial Consultation

The first step in orthodontic treatment is to visit our office for a consultation. During this appointment, Dr. Avason will assess the teeth, gums, temporomandibular joints, and other orofacial structures. Candidates for adult orthodontics will be in good oral health, free from gum disease, decay, or other serious issues.

After evaluating your smile, Dr. Avason will design a personalized treatment plan based on your unique oral anatomy. At this point, he should be able to give you a general idea of how long your treatment will last.

Placement of Braces

Once your treatment plan has been created and reviewed with you, your braces can be placed. No matter which type of appliance you choose, placement will be completed in a single appointment.

If you opt for clear aligners, Dr. Avason will ensure the first set fits properly and will demonstrate how to wear them effectively.

Active Treatment

While you are wearing your braces, you will return to our office periodically so that Dr. Avason can assess your progress. Typically, follow-up appointments will be scheduled approximately four to six weeks apart.

To stay on track with your treatment, it is imperative that you attend these visits. Rescheduling your appointments can lengthen your timeline.

How to Prevent Damage

Depending on the type of braces you choose, you may have dietary restrictions while undergoing treatment. It is important that you follow these guidelines closely to prevent damage to your braces and keep your treatment on schedule.

In addition, it is crucial that you maintain proper oral hygiene while undergoing treatment. Brushing and flossing is essential to long-term oral health. Patients should brush after every meal and floss at least once daily. Ask Dr. Avason how to effectively clean around your appliance for optimal results.

Orthodontic Options at Avason Family Dentistry

Adults seeking orthodontic treatment have a couple of different options at our practice. The most common types of braces we offer include:

  • Invisalign®: Popular due to its discreet appearance, Invisalign moves the teeth over time using a series of removable, clear plastic trays. Patients should wear these trays for 22 hours every day; they should only be removed when brushing, flossing, eating, or drinking. Typically, the current trays are switched out for the next set about every two weeks. The average treatment time for Invisalign is comparable to traditional braces: about 18 to 24 months.
  • Six Month Smiles®: As the name suggests, Six Month Smiles can align the teeth in about half a year. While this option relies on traditional orthodontic methods, it focuses primarily on the social six: the teeth visible when you smile. Because this treatment is purely cosmetic, patients with severe misalignment may be better suited to Invisalign or traditional braces.
